Reduced Course Load (RCL) Request

What Is It?

The Reduced Course Load (RCL) Request service allows eligible F-1 students to request authorization to enroll in fewer than the required full-time credits during a semester.

International Student Services (ISS) must review and approve all Reduced Course Load requests before a student reduces their enrollment. Approved RCL authorizations will be documented in SEVIS and reflected on the student's Form I-20.

Typical processing time is 3–5 business days.

Who or What is Eligible?

You may be eligible for a Reduced Course Load if:

  • You are maintaining valid F-1 student status.
  • You are enrolled at SLCC for the current semester.
  • You qualify for one of the approved RCL categories available through this service.

This service currently supports:

  • Final Semester RCL – Students who require fewer than a full course load to complete their degree requirements.
  • Medical RCL – Students who have a documented medical condition that requires a reduced academic course load.

Eligibility will be reviewed by International Student Services before approval.

How Do I Make a Request or Report an Issue?

Before submitting your request:

  1. Determine the reason for your Reduced Course Load request.
  2. Obtain the required supporting documentation.
  3. Complete and submit this request form.
  4. Upload the required documentation based on your RCL type.

Final Semester RCL

Students requesting a Reduced Course Load because they are in their final semester must provide documentation from their Academic Advisor confirming:

  • This is the student's final semester.
  • Fewer credits are required to complete the academic program.

Acceptable documentation may include:

  • Academic Advisor email confirmation
  • Academic Advisor letter
  • Degree completion verification

Medical RCL

Students requesting a Reduced Course Load for medical reasons must provide a recommendation letter from a:

  • Licensed Medical Doctor (MD)
  • Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)
  • Licensed Clinical Psychologist

The documentation must recommend a reduced course load due to a medical condition.

After your request is submitted, ISS will review your eligibility and supporting documentation before making a decision.

When Not to Use These Services

Do not use this service if:

  • You have already reduced your course load without authorization.
  • You are requesting CPT authorization.
  • You are requesting OPT authorization.
  • You are requesting a Transfer Out.
  • You are requesting reinstatement assistance.

Students must receive ISS approval before dropping, withdrawing from, or reducing courses below full-time enrollment requirements. Failure to obtain approval may result in a violation of F-1 status.
