As we increasingly rely on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to secure our digital lives, it's crucial to remember an often-overlooked step when changing phones: backing up and restoring your MFA settings.
When you switch to a new device, your authenticator app (like Microsoft Authenticator) doesn't automatically transfer your MFA settings. This can lead to being locked out of your accounts if not handled properly. You'll then have to call the Help Desk to try and get access again.
????Here's what you need to do:????♂️
1. Backup Your MFA Settings: Before you switch phones, ensure you back up your MFA settings within your authenticator app. This usually involves enabling cloud backup or exporting your settings to a secure location.
2. Restore on Your New Device: Once you have your new phone, restore your MFA settings from the backup. This will reinstate your MFA codes and ensure seamless access to your accounts.
3. Update Your Phone Number: If you are also changing your phone number, make sure to update it in all your accounts that use SMS for recovery options. This will prevent any issues with receiving verification codes.
