Summary:
This is a reminder that the monthly Microsoft updates for SLCC computers are available for installation on all staff/faculty/lab computers. This will include the 25H2 feature update for Windows 11 systems which can take 45 minutes or more to install and require one or two reboots. These updates can take up to 15 minutes to install and require one or two reboots. Computers will also receive patches for some non-Microsoft programs such as Apple products, Firefox, Chrome, Parallels RAS, Adobe Acrobat Reader, conferencing software, and others. The college does push updates to off-site computers, however a device that is off-site for an extended time may be at risk and should be updated manually.
The full details on the update process can be found here. However, there are two preferred ways to install these updates:
1. You can initiate these updates at your convenience prior to the patch deadline on Wednesday night (1-14-2025). You can find the reminder to install the updates in your lower right task tray.
2. Simply leave your computer turned on over the weekend and it will update itself on Sunday night with no user intervention required. The computer MUST BE ON for this to occur.
If you do not install the updates prior to next Monday morning, your computer will install the updates the next time it is turned on. A warning message that your computer is installing updates will appear and it will subsequently reboot.
All Windows based SLCC systems will be restarted during this outage window. Any individual system should only be down for 5-10 minutes. Many systems, such as MySLCC, Banner and Department Shares, are served by multiple servers and will remain available during the outage window. Cloud based services e.g. Microsoft 365 including e-mail, Canvas, and Adobe will not be affected.
Additionally, the Windows 11 upgrade will be forced in this update for all capable Windows 10 machines.
