To comply with State and Federal security mandates, SLCC limits IT support and access to the internet and network resources to Windows PCs, Macs and iPads that can receive security updates from Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, etc. Any computer or devices no longer able to receive security updates should be surplus. Computers and devices older than about 5 or 6 years are usually unable to run the latest OS and they may or may not receive security updates for their older OS, depending on OS and model type. Yearly, departments should review their inventory for 5 years and older machines to develop replacement and surplus plans for the current and upcoming budget years based on the standards below.
Computers and devices from Surplus, a department’s inactive reserves or spare computers must be capable of running the latest Windows, macOS, or iPadOS to be brought back into service or reassigned to another user. Being able to run the latest OS gives the user at least a year of use on the reassigned machine if there is no hardware failure. OIT considers a device ‘inactive’ after 90 days of not reporting into SLCC’s management systems and it will be subject to reimaging and the running the latest OS requirements.
Replace and Surplus Window Computers purchase prior to 2019 by October 2025.
For a college PC to be repurposed or reassigned to another user, it must support Windows 11. Windows 10 security update support ends from Microsoft in October of 2025. The primary limiter for Windows 11 support is if a machine has a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0 chip which provides hardware-based, security cryptographic functions to Windows 11.

Chromebook, Amazon Kindle, and Android Tablet purchases are not supported for staff and faculty use. Limited support for student labs with OIT approval prior to purchase.
Apple Mac Computers
Apple provides MacOS Security updates for about 8 years from the model’s release date, but a model may be purchased new three or four years after release. Existing computers deployed and actively in use but incompatible with the latest OS can be used until their macOS version is retired. OIT will send weekly notices to devices that need to be upgraded or surplus starting January prior to OS retirement in the Fall. Once the OS is retired the college will remotely lock any devices still in use.
Any computers running MacOS 12 (Monterey) purchased prior to 2017 should be replaced and sent to surplus by this fall. Any Macs running MacOS 13 (Ventura) not capable of running MacOS 14 (Sonoma) should be replaced and sent to surplus by the fall of 2025.
