Password Managers at Salt Lake Community College
What is a Password Manager?
Password managers play a crucial role in higher education environments by enhancing digital security and simplifying access to a wide range of academic and administrative resources. These tools securely store and manage complex, unique passwords for various platforms—such as learning management systems, research databases, email accounts, and campus portals—reducing the risk of password fatigue and unsafe practices like reusing credentials. For students, faculty, and staff, password managers streamline the login process, enabling quick and secure access to essential services while promoting strong cybersecurity habits.
Salt Lake Community College requires the use of a non-browser based password manager on college owned devices. Dedicated password managers tend to be more secure in how they protect your information. There is also greater control in how the passwords are saved and shared without compromising security. Browser-based password managers may also not meet regulatory requirements for data protection and open the school up to cyberattacks or compliance issues.
The college doesn't have a specific Password Manager that must be used, but we recommend some of the more common vendors like Bitwarden, LastPass, and 1Password. MacOS also has the option to use the Passwords App.
