To enhance our security measures and protect sensitive data, we are introducing Admin By Request. This tool is crucial for safeguarding PII, HIPAA PHI, and FERPA data on college devices. By implementing Admin By Request at SLCC, we aim to balance security and usability, ensuring that staff and faculty can work efficiently in a secure IT environment. This is an important measure to comply with required security standards and safeguard our community.

Admin By Request is a security tool that manages local administrative rights on computers, granting admin access only when necessary. Initially, approved college apps will be whitelisted, requiring IT approval only for exceptions. More details can be found on their website: Endpoint Privilege Management » Admin By Request.

We will initially install the tool in audit mode for the first week or the rollout phase for staff and two weeks for faculty. In this mode, the tool prompts you for details about why you need admin rights, logs the request, but allows you to install applications as normal. This helps us gather information on the types of admin access needed without disrupting your workflow.
