Description
This article explains how to set up Microsoft Authenticator for your SLCC account during your first-time sign-in.
Microsoft Authenticator is required to protect your account and verify your identity when signing in to MySLCC, Microsoft 365, Canvas, and other SLCC services.
Before You Begin
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- Your SLCC email address
- Your newly created SLCC password
- A smartphone or mobile device
- Access to download the free Microsoft Authenticator app
Important: You must complete Microsoft Authenticator setup before you can finish signing in to your SLCC account.
What Is Microsoft Authenticator?
Microsoft Authenticator is SLCC's Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) system.
Instead of relying only on a password, Microsoft Authenticator confirms that it is really you signing in by sending an approval request to your mobile device.
This additional layer of security helps protect your account and personal information.
Set Up Microsoft Authenticator
1. Sign in to your SLCC account
After creating your password, Microsoft will automatically prompt you to set up Microsoft Authenticator.
Click Next to begin.
2. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app
If Microsoft Authenticator is not already installed, download it from your mobile device's app store.
Click the image below to enlarge the QR codes. Then, scan the QR code that matches your mobile device.
After installing the app, return to your browser or computer and click Next.
3. Open Microsoft Authenticator
Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.
Select the plus (+) icon or Add Account, and then select Work or School Account.
When prompted, allow Microsoft Authenticator to send notifications and access your camera.
4. Connect Microsoft Authenticator to your SLCC account
A QR code will appear on the device where you are completing the SLCC sign-in process.
If you are completing the setup on a computer or a second device, use Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile device to scan the QR code.
The app will securely connect to your SLCC account.
Tip: Do not scan the QR code using your mobile device's regular Camera app. Scan it from within the Microsoft Authenticator app.
4A. If you are completing setup on the same mobile device
If the QR code is displayed on the same mobile device where Microsoft Authenticator is installed, you may not be able to scan it.
Instead, complete the following steps:
- On the Microsoft setup screen, select Can’t scan the QR image?
- Microsoft will display a URL and a code.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Select the plus (+) icon or Add Account.
- Select Work or School Account.
- Select the option to enter the code manually.
- Enter the URL and code displayed in your mobile browser.
- Return to your browser and select Next.
Tip: When possible, complete the SLCC sign-in process on a computer while using Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile device. This makes it easier to scan the QR code.
5. Approve the test notification
Microsoft will send a test approval notification to your mobile device.
Open Microsoft Authenticator and approve the notification. Your computer or mobile browser will confirm that the setup was successful.
6. Finish setup
Click Next, and then click Done to complete the setup.
Your Microsoft Authenticator registration is now complete.
Important: Microsoft Authenticator setup is required before you can fully access your SLCC account. Once registration is complete, you can use Microsoft Authenticator to verify your identity when signing in to MySLCC, Microsoft 365, Canvas, Outlook, classroom computers, and other protected SLCC services.
Using Microsoft Authenticator After Setup
The next time you sign in to an SLCC service:
- Enter your SLCC email address.
- Enter your password.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator notification.
- Approve the sign-in request.
- Return to the application to finish signing in.
Security Tip: Only approve a Microsoft Authenticator request when you are actively trying to sign in. Deny unexpected requests and contact the SLCC Help Desk for assistance.
Need to Change or Replace Your Phone?
If you get a new phone or need to change your authentication method, contact the SLCC Help Desk before removing Microsoft Authenticator from your old device whenever possible.
